Investing in an Equitable Transition

The global transition to net zero emissions is already underway, accelerating and irreversible. While the world is growing more comfortable with this economic shift, what will it mean for those communities and workers reliant on emissions-intensive industries? And what can investors do to ensure they aren’t left behind?

During the May member meeting we will take a sneak peek at IGCC’s soon to be released research unpacking the actions investors can take to support a just and equitable transition to net zero emissions. The work also outlines the importance of a just transition in delivering a sustainable economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This work, supported by Aware Super, Cbus, HESTA and IFM Investors, builds on IGCC’s 2017 report Coal, Carbon and the Community: Investing in a Just Transition to provide an updated and expanded assessment of the current state of play across energy markets and the prospects for the fossil fuel sector under different climate scenarios, including orderly and delayed transition pathways. This informs specific Australian community analysis to uncover the potential social impacts of the inevitable shift to net zero, identifying both challenges and opportunities, and articulating tangible actions investors can take to support a just transition. EY was engaged to lead the research and prepare this report.

Join us to hear highlights from this important forthcoming research and to understand new insights on the role of investors in supporting a Just Transition.
