IGCC Summit 2024: Mission 1.5°: Key Moments

3 December 2024
The IGCC Annual Climate Finance & Investment Summit: Mission 1.5° brought together nearly 400 institutional investors, policymakers and climate finance experts to explore how we can accelerate Australia’s path to a net zero economy. Held during the most active period for climate policy in Australian history — and in the immediate wake of the U.S. election results — the Summit’s timely theme sparked essential discussions on investment, resilience, and the opportunities for Australia to position itself as a climate superpower.

Key Moments

Reflections on the U.S. Presidential Election Results: Investors Assess Impact of Trump’s Win

Keynotes by Matt Kean, Chris Bowen, Stan Grant, and panel discussions featuring Independent MPs Dr Monique Ryan and Zoe Daniel all addressed the US election result.

Other panels also touched on the topic.

The overall sentiment was that the result will produce headlines for global action, but Australia has unique advantages in exporting decarbonisation solutions globally.

Australia retains a comparative advantage in renewable energy resources. If that is combined with increased investment and the right policy support, Australia has significant potential to secure its status as a climate superpower, according to Rod Sims AO, Chair of The Superpower Institute.

CEO of IGCC Rebecca Mikula-Wright says: “The U.S. election results may signal some climate headwinds lie ahead, but Australia is riding some of the strongest economic tailwinds in its history, opening a unique window to capitalise on the greatest economic transformation of the century.

“For investors ready to seize this opportunity, the message from key industry leaders at IGCC’s Annual Summit was loud and clear: the policy track is already being laid – so remain focussed, gear up, and pick up the pace.”
