What’s happening
In late September, Treasury published its 2026 Intergenerational Report. It offers a wealth of information for investors and business decision-makers on energy, electrification, industry, trade, adaptation and resilience.
The report says investment in clean energy and climate resilience as central to sustaining Australia’s economy.
An accelerated global rollout of clean energy will leave Australia in a stronger fiscal position than continued reliance on coal, gas, and oil.
With energy demand expected to rise — driven by data centres among other factors — a continued rollout of renewable energy and widespread electrification can protect its businesses and households from higher-priced imported fossil fuels.
The report also highlights that “investment in disaster risk reduction and resilience will be critical to reduce losses, improve insurance affordability and support faster recovery.”
Why it matters
The report’s long-term outlook underlines the urgency of immediate reforms. IGCC members are highly incentivised to call for policy action that helps Australia harness its natural advantages and supports a prosperous, resilient economy.
