National Net Zero Authority is a Crucial Step for Transition

5 May 2023
Today’s <a href="announcement by the Federal Government of a new National Net Zero Authority is an important step towards a just, orderly, and accelerated transition.

Investors look forward to working with the Authority as it helps to co-ordinate decarbonisation opportunities across the economy, supporting the efficient allocation of capital in sectors including energy, transport, industrials, and agriculture.

Investors also welcome the Authority’s role in helping to support the workers and communities who are exposed to the transition, ensuring that the opportunities of net zero are widely shared.

The Investor Group on Climate Change has, since 2019, been one of the many organisations calling for a government authority to help manage and co-ordinate the transition.

We are encouraged by the interim arrangement of setting up the body within the Department of Prime-Minister and Cabinet, and continue to support it being ultimately established as an independent statutory Authority to provide long-term stability and credibility for its work.

IGCC’s Director of Policy & Advocacy, Erwin Jackson said:

“Australia’s transition away from fossil fuels and towards a clean, renewable energy future is happening now.”

“For the transition to net zero emissions to succeed, we must share the benefits of our transition to a clean energy economy. We cannot afford to leave workers and communities behind.
