The Net Zero Investment Framework: New Implementation Guidance for Objectives and Targets

24 January 2025
New implementation guidance is now available to assist asset owners and managers in effectively using the Net Zero Investment Framework (NZIF) to set and achieve net zero objectives and targets across various asset classes.

The NZIF is the most widely adopted framework by investors for setting net-zero targets and developing related transition plans. It lays the foundations for comprehensive net zero strategies and focuses on influencing real-world economy emissions reductions.

The new implementation guidance – produced by IIGCC and supported by IGCC, AIGCC and Ceres – is for asset owners and asset managers drawing on sections of the framework specifically relating to objectives and targets.

What’s new?

The guidance updates and replaces an earlier version of Supplementary Guidance published in 2021. It is designed to help asset owners and managers set, review, and update their individual net zero objectives and targets as part of their climate strategy or net zero commitments.

The guide outlines practical steps for implementing key aspects of the Net Zero Investment Framework – setting objectives for portfolio decarbonisation and allocation to climate solutions and setting effective asset-level alignment targets across six major asset classes: listed equities and corporate fixed income, sovereign bonds, real estate, infrastructure, private equity and private debt.
